I was talking to a fellow librarian and DM yesterday at the Massachusetts Library Association conference yesterday about my house rules, and I mentioned how I handle player absences in-game. As part of the lore, rather than by hand-waving it.
My approach here is to take a bug and make it into a feature. Hence the Flux! In my game, whenever a character crosses a planar boundary, they contract a condition known as the Flux.
What it is, is a condition whereby the character becomes somewhat unstuck in time and space. They can appear / disappear seemingly randomly without explanation. There is also a reality distortion aspect to it. The character may or may not remember their disappearance. The memories of the other characters can be affected to. Even though they've never met, the characters may seem to remember the newcomer as if they'd always had been there. Etc.
'Nuff Said!
